What are branding/advertising companies charging to name...?

a product? I am trying to land a job naming a product for a company and I don't believe they have used outside help before. I am a freelance copywriter and when I quoted the person I believe who was in charge of this project he laughed at me over the phone. I was glad to give him a laugh but what his company was looking to pay is a $100. Which is just as laughable as the price I quoted him. What he is offering is about one-tenth of one percent of what I quoted him. I believe based on industry standards the price what fair. I just think he wasn't too familar with this sort of thing. Branding and naming is worth something.

I'm surprised that someone who considers himself a "professional," had the nerve to laugh at you for requesting $1,000 for a branding assignment. After all, branding is a very involved process.I have worked for several companies that specialized in branding. Branding is more than just coming up with a clever or an original name. It's developing a personality for the company that not only identifies who it is, but sets it apart from its competition. A good, strong brand personality connects with consumers on an rational and emotional basis. If it doesn't, it's not a strong brand image. When you think of companies with strong, distinctive brands, you think of the likes of Saturn, Starbucks, Target and Coca-Cola, just to name a few. These are companies that understand the value of branding and spend millions of dollars every year to support their brands.A good brand name - which should be the product of thoughtful planning and insightful discussion, is worth a good deal more than $100. You should count yourself lucky that you didn't waste your time working for a company that has such little respect for your time and talent.
